Enhancing Functionality, Safety and Entertainment Value
In the Upper South Hall at the 2015 SEMA Show, buyers could find a space dedicated to the powersports niche of the specialty-equipment market. The term “powersports” encompasses a wide range of recreational activities, providing parts and accessories for motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, side-by-sides and scooters, used both on the road and off pavement.
SEMA research has found that more than one-third of automotive accessory enthusiasts may own a powersports vehicle, indicating that this is a section with enormous potential for SEMA members. In addition, a wide number of exhibitors at the SEMA Show include powersports specialty parts in their catalogs, along with products aimed at the broader automotive segment. SEMA News caught up with a couple of exhibitors to learn where they are focusing their attention in this recreational niche.
Walker Evans Racing produces performance shocks and beadlock wheels for recreational applications. Reid Nordin, who works in product development for the company, said that from his perspective, “Attendance at off-road events, competitions and shows is high, and customer enthusiasm is strong.”
Opportunities for new products continue to abound, since consumers are eager to push the boundaries of where these vehicles can go, according to Justin Andrews, marketing and sales manager for Factor 55. Based in Boise, Idaho, the engineering design firm offers wide range of winches and hitch components.
“We have seen a number of vehicle owners trading in their fullsize trail rigs for lighter and faster UTVs,” Andrews said. “The ability to go fast and get through narrower spots on the trail has changed many consumers’ minds about the purchase of a UTV or side-by-side. We are seeing UTV owners building more aggressive vehicles to not only go fast on trails or in the desert but to also tackle climbing big rock obstacles.”
For companies looking to beef up their powersports product lines, Andrews and Nordin pointed to wheel, tire and shock options as growing in popularity—for UTVs as well as the trucks and Jeeps that haul them.
“Among our highest demand for product are for beadlock wheels for the 4x4 Jeep and truck community, while shocks for Jeeps are taking off,” said Nordin. “Side-by-side performance shocks are always in great demand. We have a solid product line in snow and side-by-side performance shocks but see a big need in performance improvements in Jeep shocks—that has been a big focus for new development. Side-by-sides will continue to be hot as new models hit the market at affordable prices, and aftermarket part fitment opportunities are abundant.”
Factor 55’s Andrews also reported noticing recent increases in the popularity of racing applications.
“We see a lot more people buying UTVs and turning them into race buggies for Baja and for the Ultra4 racing series, perhaps being a less expensive way to become competitive in these areas,” he said.
